The top 10 food and beverage companies, as rated by the Fortune Global 500 list, are working diligently towards a more sustainable future in reusable and even some previously considered unconscionable approaches. I recently held in my very own hands a beautifully made polo shirt of the utmost quality, feel and texture, only to find out it was made out of recycled glass bottles. Who would have thought? Well, someone did.
There’s an irony about the term consumable when it comes to food and beverage. The word “consume” clearly means dispose of or devour. The term “sustain”, on the contrary, means to prolong. Our biodegradable, compostable issues are being attacked with out of the box forward thinking - like glass-bottle manufactured polo shirts.
Here’s your top 10 global food & beverage leaders in order by revenue*:
Uniliver
- Nestle
- Danone
- PepsiCo
- Coca-Cola
- AB InBev
- Kraft
- Heineken
- Tyson
- Kirin Holdings
Although some of the companies listed are addressing sustainable issues at a more eco-driven rate than others, all of the companies face significant challenges – especially with regard to their supply chains. Here are 11 sited key sustainability challenges facing the food and beverage industry as sited from a report by Tomorrow’s Values* proving consumers’ social and environmental concerns are a driving force.
In summary, food and beverage companies take heed. Reintroducing packaging waste into a secondary purposeful product that is socio-eco acceptable may require eccentrically bizarre ideas. The good news is my children and grandchildren are a testament that the upcoming generation is up to the challenge!
